Postdoctoral Research Title

The cognitive bases of evidence resistance: the role of group identification in belief and impression updating

Brief Presentation
The subject of this research is the study of cognitive mechanisms and factors that influence belief formation on social and political issues as well as in more neutral contexts such as the estimation of quantitative quantities based on direct visual stimuli. Specifically, the work focuses on the influence of social identity on belief formation and revision and vulnerability to misinformation. The project studies two possible cognitive mechanisms to explain this phenomenon: (1) the presence of an ingroup protection motive that leads to motivated reasoning in favor of the ingroup (ingroup bias) or (2) the existing bias regarding the credibility of the ingroup and outgroup that makes even those motivated by the truth (bayesian reasoning) vulnerable to misinformation.

Funding

The research is funded within the framework of the call for “3rd Call for Research Projects EL.IDEK. for the support of Postdoctoral Researchers by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (EL.IDEK).
